Rich Source of Vitamin E
Vitamin E has been touted as an important antioxidant that may have cardioprotective benefits. Consumers have high awareness of vitamin E, placing it among the top-selling vitamin supplements in the United States. The newly revised food guidance system, known as MyPyramid, specifically lists hazelnuts (filberts) as one of the richest sources of vitamin E and the guidelines suggest choosing hazelnuts more often to help meet vitamin E recommendations.
Food products and menu items containing hazelnuts can often be marketed as “good” or “excellent” sources of protein, fiber, and certain vitamins and minerals.
One ounce of hazelnuts contains:
| Protein | 4.2 g |
Fiber | 2.7 g |
Vitamin E | 4.3 mg* |
| Folate | 32 mcg |
Potassium | 193 mg |
Magnesium | 46 mg |
| Calcium | 32 mg |
Phytosterols | 27 mg |

*The Daily Value (DV) for vitamin E is 20 mg. One ounce of hazelnuts provides over 20 percent if the DV and can be considered an “excellent” source of vitamin E.
Fatty Acid Profile of Hazelnuts
Not only do hazelnuts add protein, vitamins and minerals to food products, they are also low in saturated fat and high in mono- and polyunsaturated fats. The favorable fatty acid profile is another reason why hazelnuts are great in heart-smart snacks.
