NutTrends newsletter story about hazelnuts Mediterranean Diet Promotion Slated for 2007

Diet research, new marketing efforts come into focus Alzheimer’s disease. An article, published in the October Issue of Archives of Neurology, explains people who eat foods closest to a Mediterranean-style diet are 68 percent less likely to have Alzheimer's than those whose diets are least similar.

The Mediterranean diet consists of fish, nuts, red wine, olive oil, grains and vegetables. Hazelnuts, being a natural crop of the Mediterranean, fit easily into the diet.

American research on the Mediterranean-style diet began in the late 1950s with nationally recognized nutritionist Ansel Keys. His research concluded that people who ate a Mediterranean diet had lower rates of death due to cardiovascular diseases, even though their cholesterol levels matched those in the United States, where disease rates were much higher.

With the diet’s fast-growing body of science, it is no surprise that marketing efforts promoting its importance in the U.S. are on the horizon.

Oldways, the organization behind the Whole Grains Stamp, plans to promote the diet through a four-year public education campaign as well as launch a new consumer-friendly symbol designed to flag food products that fit the Mediterranean diet.

This campaign and ongoing research will drive consumers to look for a new stamp of nutrition. Heart-healthy hazelnuts are the addition companies need when developing new Mediterranean products!
