Healthful Snacks - Fastest Growing NicheOn any given day, 90 percent of Americans treat themselves to a snack. Although Americans are consuming about the same weight (about 21 ounces) of snacks daily as they did three decades ago, the number of snack calories has increased significantly.1 But higher calories don’t necessarily equate to junk food. About three-quarters of American shoppers now try to eat (and snack) more healthfully, according to a recent survey by Information Resources Inc. Two-thirds of Americans report trying to replace high-calorie snacks with healthier options or eat snacks with more nutritional value. Consumers recognize nuts, which contain unsaturated fatty acids and other nutrients, as a healthy and satisfying snack. Now is the time to enhance your product line by adding hazelnuts. After all, 43 percent of Americans believe hazelnuts make a healthy snack.2 Hazelnuts are one of the most nutritious tree nuts. They offer one of the best nut sources of heart healthy monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs) per serving and have one of the lowest percentages of saturated fat. They are also an excellent source of vitamin E. This versatile nut is easily paired with an array of flavors for snack foods, from granola bars to trail mixes.
